The CARP program offers free foundational programming skills and mentorship to junior college students in San Diego interested in astrophysics research, aiming to facilitate their transition to a four-year university.

CARP Workshop Overview

Mentorship Component

Navigating the transfer from a two-year to a four-year college presents unique challenges. This segment of the CARP workshop includes activities covering the transfer process, adapting to university life, and using resources like ASSIST and UC TAP. Additionally, we discuss the benefits of mentorship and strategies for building a supportive academic community post-transfer.

Computational Component

Programming skills are essential for academic research. Partnering with The Carpentries, CARP offers lessons from Software and Data Carpentry communities to teach participants the basics of Python, using techniques and tools important for astrophysics research.

Workshop Requirements

Participants should bring a laptop with a Mac, Linux, or Windows operating system with administrative privileges (not a tablet or Chromebook) and pre-installed software as specified below.

Who Can Attend?

This workshop is open to San Diego County community college students, with priority given based on needs-based criteria to create a diverse and inclusive group. We welcome students from all majors, but space is limited.

Additional Eligibility Information

No prior coding experience is required, though basic familiarity with astronomy topics (e.g., reference frames, proper motion) is beneficial. Eligibility is primarily based on transfer intent, transfer readiness, and interest in computational research.

Workshop Themes

  • Day 1: Introduction to Python & Elucidating the Transfer Process
  • Day 2: Data Visualization & Crafting Your Future
  • Day 3: Introduction to Unix Shell & High-Performance Computing
  • Day 4: Foundations of Astro Data Science Part I & Post-Transfer Survival Strategies
  • Day 5: Foundations of Astro Data Science Part II & Constructing Support Networks for Academic Success
